06 - POV Pirate of the Caribbean

1.  My Reaction

This ride is VERY different from the ones in Orlando and California. At first, I didn't think anything spectacular would happen because the beginning was very slow and there wasn't many animatronics but right when you see the visual effects that turn the skeleton into Jack Sparrow, everything started happening. It was a very immersive ride because of the 360 screen the riders come into as well as the scene where the explosion happened. Also, the Hong Kong ride was based on the most recent "Pirates" movie whereas the older rides are half based on history/ half based on the older movies. Overall, it looks like a great immersive experience and I'd love to experience it one day.

2. Connections Made

The connections I made was that this ride is tied very closely to the most recent POTC movies. It was based mostly underwater with the half sea creature/ half human people and you see that throughout the whole piece. The combining of the 360 screen with actual ships made it feel as if you were really in the scene itself as well as the visual effects used such as the bringing on of Jack Sparrow and the portal thing we go into. It makes it believable and the overall feeling felt cohesive.

3. What changes would you make to adapt this ride into another medium? What changes would you make?

I think I would make this ride into a 4D planetarium dome experience. Since the ride already uses some 360 screen experiences, It would be possible to take that footage along with new element and capture it so that it would fit a dome. I wouldn't change anything conceptually about the piece but I would pumps of scented air that really brings the experience together such as smells of the sea breeze, gunpowder, and maybe a burnt wood smell for when the explosion happens. I believe that adding these elements could really enhance not only the ride but the dome experience as well.
